Survival of the Fattest

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who reads
this. I’m sure you’ve heard it in
just about every media outlet over the last decade, but America is, for lack of
a better term; fat. Waistlines
everywhere are expanding despite efforts put forth by governments, schools and
one very popular NBC show in particular.
What’s the deal America?
How did we come to this?
And better yet, how do we change it?

We’ve long enjoyed our reign atop the socio and economic
peaks, but now it seems more true than ever that history may indeed repeat
itself. You work hard, you
struggle, you get ahead, you succeed, you get fat and lazy, you fall off. If this pattern holds true, America is
at the cliff’s edge and teetering.
Our own obesity is not only a matter of personal risk it has become an
issue of national security. In a
recent study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, they found
that nearly 1 in 4 military applicants are rejected because they are
overweight or obese. I wonder how much McDonald’s stock
Al-Qaida owns?

All Jokes aside, there’s nothing funny about what’s going on
in this country. When did America
adopt this “Someone Will Take Care Of Me” mentality? What happened to taking care of yourself? The truth is you have to start insuring
your best asset; you. Change is
never easy, but it’s nothing you can’t do. Follow a few easy steps to get started.

1. Eat To Lose

If you’re starving yourself to lose weight think about the
message you’re sending your body.
Essentially you’re telling your body to store fat because it will
naturally go into starvation mode, which can work short term, but as soon as
you eat normally again the weight will come back twice as fast. Eat at least 5-6 meals (including
snacks) per day and space them out every 2-3 hours. Every meal should have a protein of some sort included. Usually each meal will be between 200-
400 calories of good clean foods.
Yes, it takes some work, but your metabolism and waistline will thank
you.

2. Protein
Power

It’s the building blocks of your body, it helps you recover,
it keeps you feeling fuller longer blah blah blah. What does this mean?
What it boils down to is that protein is a wonderful weapon in the fight
against flab. Muscle is really the
key here. Muscle, from a calorie
standpoint is very expensive, which is why people who are typically very
muscular often eat more than the typical person and don’t gain. The more muscle you have the more
protection you have against storing fat.
What sustains muscle though?
You got it. A basic rule of
thumb for how much protein you should take in is 1 gr. of protein per lb of
body weight. This figure needs to
be adjusted according to how you exercise of course. Personally, I use 1.5gr./lb of body weight, but I know how
my body reacts to that measure and it’s in line with the intensity of my
workouts.

3. Your Mom Was
Right

Eat your breakfast already! It truly is the most important meal of the day, why? Overnight your body is still using
calories to operate necessary functions, like breathing, digestion etc. Where are these calories coming from if
you haven’t eaten in 7-8 hours because you were asleep? Typically, your body will actually
break down muscle tissue to suffice.
The answer, don’t sleep, ever.
Ok fine ya sissy, sleep but when you wake up start with a big healthy
breakfast. Think of the word
itself “Break” and “Fast”, literally the word means break the fast. (fast·ing -
abstention from all or certain types of food.) So eat breakfast for heaven’s sake and give your muscles the
calories they need to burn fat.
Don’t have time for breakfast?
Here’s my advice, make time for it. Capiche?

4. Plan Ahead

Simply going through the day and expecting good choices to
be around you when you need them isn’t going to cut it. Again, quit depending on others to make
it happen for you. Remember the
quote “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? Well, it’s pretty famous for a reason, because it’s
true. I’m too busy, I don’t have
time, I’ve got a lot going on…….welcome to club. If you really want the change you’ll find time for it. It might be a hassle to learn a new way
of cooking and eating, but you’ll be surprised that when you’ve got your system
down it becomes much easier and faster than rummaging through cabinets like a
raccoon in a dumpster looking for something to eat.

By no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a few important
basics to any weight management plan.
What’s the most important thing you can do right now though? START! Your plan won’t be perfect from the
start, you won’t have the best workouts to begin and you certainly will stumble
from time to time, but stop worrying about it. You learn as you go, but you certainly know what’s in store if you never get off the
starting blocks. Think of us as
those guys that give you those little cups of Gatorade during a marathon. We can’t run the race for you, but we
can do our best to keep you going.
The rest is up to you!

Yours In Fitness & Health,

     Jesse Rooney

Healing You From The Inside Out

Healing You From The Inside Out isn't just an expression it's a
promise. We've seen such amazing things here at Pikes Peak Hyperbaric
and the stories keep coming. Our latest comes from Kim R who is a
semi-pro golfer and broke his Patella more commonly known as the "knee
cap". Kim had heard of Hyperbaric Therapy as a treament for athletic
injuries and decided to give it a shot. Sounds like he's glad he did.
Here's his words...

This
X-ray is after 19 days. Notice the lower breaks are totally filled
with bone and virtually gone. The upper break is filled with bone almost
50% it seems. I am no doc but after 7 treatments in the chamber they
released me on this day to play golf and do anything else I could do
minus squats and running. While they did not say it out right, you could
tell the doctor was very surprised at the healing. He asked me how many
days it had been since I broke it a number of times. Almost confused.
This is normally a very long healing process. Three weeks later I was
released to resume full activity. I am at 6 weeks 3 days today and I
have no pain and I have been doing more than 1 hour a day on the
elliptical machine and I have golfed 10 / 18 hole rounds in the last
three weeks. All walking. Thanks for the help. Nothing short of amazing.

Kim R

Pikes Peak Hyperbaric - Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The Hyperbaric Chamber provides up to 300% more
oxygen saturation, allowing wounds to heal faster, swelling to be
reduced much more quickly, restoration or increased blood flow to
injured areas therefore hastening healing, aiding in detoxification and
promoting general wellness. Furthermore, bacteria, viruses and yeast
cannot survive in an oxygen enriched environment and the pressurized
environment of the mild hyperbaric chamber allows many to recover much
quicker from surgery or injury.

Reasons to use hyperbaric
chambers vary. We treat many individuals with a wide range of symptoms
as well as those suffering from chronic diseases and debilitating
conditions such as ASD, Alzheimer's, Dementia, Stroke, Traumatic Brain
Injury, Lyme Disease, Cancer, Parkinson, Fibromyalgia, MS, Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome, allergies, gut issues, sleep problems, just to scratch
the surface. At present there are around 66 conditions that are being
treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Location: 695 S. Colorado Blvd, Suite 210

Truly Inspiring - Small Miracles in Georgia

When I first put a
blog post on this site I wasn’t sure if I would use it all that much. The thing is I enjoy writing, but I’m
not one who writes just to write.
Usually an event or experience spurs something inside me that’s
significant enough for me to feel like I need to let it out. If I write I hope you know it means
something. As I’m writing this I
find myself sitting in the spacious confines of economy class row 12, seat C. Between the jarring for elbow space and almost seizure
inducing ads for Direct TV flashing on the screen in front of my face I feel an
overwhelming sense that I’m incredibly lucky to be where I am right now. Much to your dismay I’m not on
this flight for the gourmet peanuts.
A few days ago my father asked me if I would like to join him in coming
to Georgia to meet a man by the name of Bill Schindler and learn about HBOT,
otherwise known as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. I didn’t know anything about Bill or much about HBOT, but I
did know that I had a “gut” feeling that this is something I wanted to know
more about. My father had
contacted Bill a week or two earlier and without even knowing who we were
invited us to come to Georgia and not only that, he wanted us to stay with him
and his wife. At this point you
could say this might be a great experience or the next episode to the Saw
horror movie saga. So we did
exactly what you shouldn’t do in a horror movie; we went into the unknown.

As we drove through
winding little roads past neatly kept houses on this overcast day one couldn’t
help but wonder what we were getting into. We rang the doorbell and watched the door swing open to Bill
and his wife. If there were any
suspicious feelings lingering they were quickly washed away with Bill’s
contagious energy and fist pound handshake followed by the hand explosion.
(That might go right over some of your heads, don’t worry) With the scent of a wonderful meal
wafting through the house perched over a private lake nestled in pine
trees, Bill dives into what would
be 24 hours straight of what I can only describe as passion in it’s purest
form.

So who is Bill
Shindler and why did we fly all the way from Colorado to Cumming Georgia to
meet him? It’s weird to think that
in 2010 pioneers still exist, but Bill is exactly that and he has essentially
put Hyperbaric Therapy on the map so to speak. HBOT is something that’s been
around for many years, but only recently is it starting to become recognized
for the wonderful things it can do thanks to advances in technology. HBOT is a way of super-saturating the
body with oxygen. So what’s so
great about that? Have you ever heard of an NFL player by the name of Terrell
Owens? A few years back Terrell
Owens was a star receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles heading to the Super Bowl
when he suffered what was supposed to be a season ending ankle injury. With such a devastating injury it was
impossible for T.O. to play the game so he enlisted the help of Bill Schindler
who had Terrell Owens not only walking again, but playing in the biggest
football game in the NFL and what’s more is he had a great game. Bill Schindler runs a modest clinic in
an unassuming medical building, but as as you walk through the doors you’re
inundated with the stories of people whose lives have been irreversibly changed
by what Bills doing. In this
building, diseases such as Parkinson’s, Diabetes, M.S., Cerebral Palsy, Cancer
and Autism are not only being treated, but conquered.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
is essentially the equivalent of taking a dive to the bottom of an 11-foot pool
and staying there for an hour or so.
The only difference is you’re breathing pure oxygen and lying in a
Hyperbaric Chamber. Why is oxygen
so important? To figure that out
just hold your breath! Simply put,
no other element in this world is more necessary to our lives than oxygen
itself. Just take a look at stroke
victims who lose crucial functions of their brains after just a few minutes
without it. The great barrier to
treating these conditions is crossing the brain/blood barrier that only allows
certain substances to cross it.
Think of it like a guard who tells you that you can’t come in. You try to come in different disguises,
but unlike Tom Cruise, you’re not sneaking in this time. There’s a simple law of physics that states
that gas becomes a liquid under a certain amount of pressure. What HBOT does is pressurize the body
so that the oxygen you’re breathing is absorbed into your red blood cells, the
carriers of oxygen in the body and also the plasma that the cells are suspended
in. With super-saturated
oxygen red bloods cells floating through the body it’s like kicking the body’s
immune system into overdrive. This
is why burn patients, injured soldiers and the likes are treated with
HBOT. The body simply is getting
the element it needs most to do the thing it does best; find a way to
survive!

I could spend a page
upon page recanting stories that Bill told us, or the hundreds of signed
footballs, baseballs, boxing gloves, racing jerseys, posters, hats and other
memorabilia that I saw from today’s top and most influential athletes, but the
thing that touched me the most is that Bill could care less about it. Bill never paid the $80,000 dollars per
race cost to have his logo plastered on the fastest funny car in history. Bill never charged a dime to the more
than 20,000 special needs children he’s taken sailing through his program
Hearts For Sailing. The
interesting thing is Bill isn’t independently wealthy or backed by private
funding. These miracles he’s
pulling off are a direct result of people being so moved by the work he’s doing
and the results he’s getting that they are willing to donate it all.

Looking back on this
trip I realize it was much more than just a trip to Georgia. I learned lessons that hopefully I can
take with me for the rest of my life, both personal and professionally. Follow through on your word, treat
people with respect, give people more than they expect and go the extra
mile. Show people that good in the
world is still very much alive and it lives in each and every one of us. Do what’s right and do it well, the
rest will take care of itself.
Until Next time guys, thanks for reading!

Yours In Fitness
& Health,

                Jesse
